Is there evidence that the Cultural Revolution consolidated Mao's leadership?

"The Cultural Revolution was to be the means by which Mao would reert his authority over China and the CCP" [p.80, Michael Lynch, 'The People's Republic of China 1949-76 Second Edition', 2008] I have also read this in many other sources; that the Revolution was Mao's way of regaining power. I am of course aware that the consequences of the events that took place between '66-76 were catastrophic but what I would like to know is whether the fear and terror caused by these events helped cement Mao as the ultimate and unquestionable height of authority.. in any way; big OR small. It might help if you know that I am writing an essay entitled 'Did the Cultural Revolution in 1968 help or hinder Mao’s position as leader of China?' Which may appear to have an obvious answer, but I need to discuss both sides of the argument! Thanks :)
