Help with question relating to relativity?

Suppose in spaceship you travel past earth @ spear nearr speed of light & people on earth tell you that your ship appears to be contracted, Comment on the idea of checking their observation by placing a meter tick or finer measuring device to your spaceship & making measurement yourself.
