How did James and Sirius get Animagus Forms?

I am writing a fan fiction in which Harry and a few others (Not Ron or Hermione) are taught by Remus how to gain an animagus form. (They would be unregistered). I realize it's really tough magic, and difficult to accomplish, but Sirius and James were able to accomplish it while they were in school. Does anyone know how?
